Re: Borai - Anybody from London EP
So what was the score with Top Buzz being voted one of London's worst DJ(s)? The only thing I can think of is maybe London preferred the more breakbeat / Jungle influence rather than the diverse range of styles that Top Buzz used to play in a set.
Liking those tunes, would buy it if it was a 3-4 track single record but £18.35 including postage is a lot of dosh, they've got their work cut out shifting 500 units Imo. I hope they prove me wrong!

Re: Borai - Anybody from London EP
I agree. And listening again, after that intro I don't think the drop smashes it nearly enough. This guy is from Bristol, and really you need to be from London to use the sample with the irony that Mad P said it. A nice release overall still, some nice sounds in the tracks.
Not sure of the whole story that led to that line, I've got the set and always wondered. Clueless whoever they were!

Yeah, some really good music coming out these past few years. Haven't been this excited about dance music in a while.

I like that ep but very expensive for a 4-track ep that is - imo - nothing special. Nice sounds though
Is that the Bristol axis of evil?

Re: Borai - Anybody from London EP
Not a big fan of that Borai. Oldskool seems to just be a defacto thing all sorts of younger artists can reference for instant points without thinking it through much or doing anything clever with it. Not that I expect everyone to do clever stuff - I'm perfectly happy w/ stuff that shows knowledge + real understanding of tunes back then, and works with those old tunes. Instead it's just a sort of easy reference point for people to fire off whenever they haven't gotten a better idea brewing, chucking it in with latest du-jour style. Got a dull track? chuck a rave piano over it, or an amen or dub fx or a rewind sample or whatever other energetic sample shouts "ardcore".
In contrast, most of the guys you mention below do good new stuff (couple of em are friends) but I don't think they really have anything to do with oldskool exactly. Thank fuck for that, would like them and their tunes significantly less if they had endless cheap n obvious pirate radio or "biggest rave on earth" references.

Yes, completely. I like the Borai but I'm not eager to buy it or play it out. give or take. As you said the other guys are doing good new stuff and aren't trying to sound oldskool. I think the divide between house, techno and UK bass orientated music is becoming less apparent. Lot of youngsters aren't restricting themselves to london or the nuum which can only be a good thing. I think journalists and public media perception really drove that separation to a point where the scenes appeared to be so disconnected from each other - I'm looking at you, Simon Reynolds!pete.devnull wrote:Not a big fan of that Borai.
