Yeah, that was one of the best sounding releases for sure. I wonder what their studio set up was? They did have an Amiga grittiness to their sound..dj jedi wrote:That's why Music In Search Of Light Remix is my favourite Formation tune, it's one of the few not to fall victim to the terrible distortion and mastering the label is famous for. A lot of their releases would be worthy of remakes.Fizza wrote:if the audio hadn't been so distorted when it all starts going I'd have played it a lot more...

Re: Awesome Formation Tunes...
One of the best there was! So many releases. Have collected the majority of mine over the last few years, there were a lot pressed so can find very nice copies with a bit of patience. Like Nebkins says the artwork and sleeves is fantastic. I recently saw some pics online from the shop in 93, with tracks for sale and some sleeves along one of the wall. Really cool I'll try and find them.
Some of my faves..
Other ones I cant find like Oaysis - Heaven (why isnt this on YT) and Grand National 93 which is my favourite mix. Big up the Leicester!

Although not totally my preferred style, I'm a big fan of this record. The breakdown on Jammin in particular:
And no love so far for this cracker? Moody as fuck:

Yes Paul both wicked! That sample in Jammin is from poltergeist isn't it?
Re: Awesome Formation Tunes...
Love the Ratty EP but it's yet again another victim of shit production/mastering, it's distorted to fuck.

Re: Awesome Formation Tunes...
those were the first two i was going to post actually paul
i have to say i really don't notice much of this distortion that apparently wrecks some of the Formation tunes. i hear that the production sounds a bit rough round the edges in parts, but say the distortion at the start of Darkman - Strings of Darkness...now i do notice that, but i like the effect. far from ruins it. and on tunes like that Ratty EP i don't really hear it at all!
then again that might just be my higher distortion tolerance...
anyway...probably my favourite Formation is the EP this is from:
always liked this one too:
from the 92 ones, the Brainstorm Crew EP as mentioned, and the Megadrive one...also:
love the first half of this in particular. whole EP is a bit of a hidden gem though i think:

Re: Awesome Formation Tunes...
Yeah I think the same, its just a touch of analog distortion and I would guess that its probably intentional to give the impression of the tune being so loud and heavy that its mashing the speaker. Nearly every early Dillinja track has got it, he was renowned for blowing cutter heads trying to get that sound!Traffic Cone wrote: i have to say i really don't notice much of this distortion that apparently wrecks some of the Formation tunes. i hear that the production sounds a bit rough round the edges in parts, but say the distortion at the start of Darkman - Strings of Darkness...now i do notice that, but i like the effect.
On the other hand I can see why people might not like it, it does obviously impact on the sound quality. I think people just use it to add rawness, its not something I would want in a new DnB record but for this early stuff I think its kinda cool.
